The land adjoining All Saints Church, now known as Vicar’s Wood, was originally a private orchard and acquired by the Parish Council in 1984 for £500.  It is now a valued amenity in the village, providing an improved environment for birds and wildlife by the careful low intensity management of native tree and plant species.

A volunteer project commenced in 2007 in conjunction with the Parish Council.  The  management plan is based on the following principles:

1. Preserve the existing amenity value while avoiding too much human activity away from the main paths

2. Provide more shelter for wildlife

3. Encourage wildlife by gradually reducing the exotic plants and adding native species

4. Use voluntary effort where appropriate to provide both physical help and expertise

5. Minimise the amount of ‘gardening’ to encourage natural habitats and lessen disturbance

A wide variety of trees, shrubs, climbers and woodland plants help provide the right conditions for biodiversity to thrive.

Vicar’s Wood has become a haven for residents and visitors to sit awhile and appreciate nature through the seasons, and for children to run about in and explore before and after school.
